Spoilers for Haunted Hotel Season 2, Episode 5, “Astral Esther.”

“Astral Esther” takes one of the show’s most unpredictable characters and turns her curiosity into a full-blown supernatural emergency. After an astral-projection mishap, Katherine and Shayna must help Esther find her own body, while Nathan takes Ben and Abaddon to a lake populated by mermaids. The two storylines give the episode a mix of body-displacement comedy, family bonding and an unexpectedly tense creature adventure.

The episode premiered on October 9, 2026, as the fifth installment of Season 2. TVmaze’s episode guide and the public Reddit discussion thread confirm the title and basic premise. Check the episode guide or visit the official Netflix series page.

Esther’s astral projection goes very wrong

Esther is bold, impulsive and rarely inclined to slow down when a strange idea appears. That makes astral projection a perfect recipe for disaster: the promise of exploring beyond the limits of her body is irresistible, but the mishap leaves her needing help to get back where she belongs. The premise creates an immediate practical problem while giving the episode room to explore Esther’s vulnerability.

The body-recovery plot also changes the usual family dynamic. Esther is often the one who pushes situations toward chaos, but here she depends on Katherine and Shayna to help her navigate the consequences. Their involvement gives the story a more caring center than a simple supernatural gag, and it lets Esther’s independence coexist with the fact that she is still a kid who sometimes needs support.

Katherine and Shayna make a strong rescue team

Katherine is already balancing the hotel, family responsibilities and a building full of supernatural complications. Helping Esther recover her body adds another crisis to the pile, but it also highlights Katherine’s role as a parent who has to respond even when the problem is bizarre beyond ordinary explanation. She cannot simply lecture Esther and walk away; she has to help her solve the mess.

Shayna’s involvement expands the support system around Esther. Their shared task keeps the episode focused on character relationships rather than treating astral projection as a one-off visual trick. The story’s emotional core is simple: when Esther loses control of a risky experiment, she is not abandoned to figure it out alone.

Nathan takes Ben and Abaddon to a mermaid-filled lake

The episode’s second storyline sends Nathan, Ben and Abaddon away from the hotel to a lake filled with mermaids. It offers a different kind of supernatural threat from Esther’s astral mishap: rather than trying to get a displaced spirit back into the right body, the trio has to navigate an environment where the creatures themselves are part of the danger.

The trip also gives Nathan time with Ben and Abaddon outside the familiar hotel routines. Nathan’s afterlife makes him an unusual adult figure in the family—he can be funny and reassuring, but his ghostly perspective means ordinary outings can become extraordinary in a hurry. Ben’s presence gives the adventure a relatable point of view, while Abaddon adds his own volatile energy to the group.

Why “Astral Esther” feels important to the season

A spoiler-free fan review posted after viewers finished the season called “Astral Esther” a necessary character-development episode, and another viewer ranked it among the season’s strongest entries. Those reactions are individual opinions rather than a formal audience survey, but they point to what the episode does well: it gives Esther the central problem and allows her relationships with Katherine and Shayna to shape the resolution.

The parallel lake story keeps the episode from becoming too heavy. The mermaids bring creature-feature energy and an excuse for Nathan, Ben and Abaddon to collide in an unfamiliar setting. The contrast between Esther’s personal crisis and the boys’ dangerous excursion gives the episode momentum, while the family connections keep both plots tied to the larger series.

Verdict

“Astral Esther” is a strong mid-season entry because it gives Esther a supernatural problem with personal stakes and makes Katherine and Shayna active partners in the rescue. The mermaid-lake subplot brings danger and absurdity, with Nathan, Ben and Abaddon making an entertainingly mismatched expedition team. Together, the two stories balance character growth with the series’ signature supernatural comedy.
