Coast Guard and FBI board Texas-bound oil tanker over suspected cyber intrusion September 2026

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Coast Guard and FBI boarded a foreign-flagged oil tanker bound for Texas after investigators determined its onboard network may have been compromised, according to reporting on a maritime cyber response that has drawn new attention this week.

A team of Coast Guard cyber operators, a vessel inspector, and FBI Cyber Action Team agents went aboard before the ship reached port, examining IT and operational systems with the crew. Officials said there was no operational disruption, no danger to the crew, and no environmental impact from the incident under review.

Why it matters

Large crude carriers move millions of barrels on routes that have shifted as conflict squeezes the Strait of Hormuz. A successful cyber intrusion into navigation or engine controls could threaten shipping lanes and energy prices Americans feel at the pump.

Attribution and next steps

Washington has not publicly named an attacker. Iranian state media has claimed broader cyber campaigns against U.S.-linked shipping, claims American officials have not confirmed in detail.

Expect further Coast Guard and FBI guidance to operators on network hygiene for ships calling at U.S. ports.
