Ben DeSoto walked away from a mid-air plane breakup with almost no physical injuries. He was sitting in seat 13F. Everyone he cared about on that flight died. A month later he is working the night shift for a man who vomits black sludge every time 13 people die.

Fans and early critics are asking the same question: Is Ben even alive?

The Crash That Should Have Killed Him

In the opening minutes of episode 1, Ben forces himself onto a plane he never wanted to board. His girlfriend Kira has planned a full 13-themed birthday trip. He has triskaidekaphobia. He sits in 13F anyway. The plane tears apart in a storm. Twelve of Kira’s friends and Kira herself are gone. Only Ben and one other passenger in 13B survive.

The survival is already suspicious. Ben has no serious injuries. He remembers the crash in fragments. At the exact moment the plane goes down, Mr. Nas is standing at a window in New York vomiting the same black substance that appears again during the clown school massacre. The show links Ben’s survival to Nas’s reaction from the very first episode.

Why the Theory Exists

American Horror Story has a long history of characters who do not realize they are dead. Ghosts who still go through the motions of living. Souls trapped in loops. People who walk out of disasters that should have ended them.

Ben fits the pattern a little too cleanly:

  • He survives a catastrophic crash with almost no physical damage.
  • He is immediately drawn into the orbit of Constance Langdon and Mr. Nas.
  • He takes a job that previous caregivers did not survive.
  • He is surrounded by people who have already died once and returned.
  • The number that terrified him is now the force that seems to have chosen him.

Some viewers believe Ben died on the plane and simply does not know it yet. Others think something — possibly Nas himself — protected or claimed him because he sat in seat 13F. Either version makes the character’s presence on the 13th floor feel less like coincidence and more like design.

What the Show Has Actually Shown

So far the series has not confirmed or denied the theory. Ben eats, sleeps, panics, and interacts with the living world like a normal person. Constance treats him as a living employee. He receives news alerts on his phone. He has memories of the crash and of Kira.

At the same time, the show keeps underlining how unnatural his survival was. The other characters who surround him — Tate, Adelaide, the Black Dahlia, even Constance herself in some readings — have all crossed the line between life and death before. Ben is the only major new character who appears to be purely alive. That alone makes him stand out.

Why It Matters

If Ben is dead, then the season’s central point-of-view character is already part of the supernatural world he is trying to understand. His fear of the number 13 becomes tragic rather than just psychological. His job caring for Mr. Nas becomes something closer to a soul’s unfinished business.

If he is alive, then he is the audience’s last fully human anchor in a story rapidly filling with ghosts, witches, and whatever Nas actually is. His survival becomes the exception that proves the rule: the number 13 kills in patterns, but it also selects.

Either answer changes how the rest of the season will land.

What Comes Next

Episode 5, “Date Night,” is described as centering on a friend of Ben’s late girlfriend who wants to reconnect. That synopsis feels designed to force Ben to confront the crash again. Whether the “friend” is living, dead, or something in between may give the clearest signal yet about Ben’s own status.

Until then the question hangs over every scene he is in. Joey Pollari is playing a man who walked out of a disaster that should have erased him. The show has not told us whether he walked out — or was carried.

The Ghost-Who-Does-Not-Know Pattern

American Horror Story has used unaware dead characters before. Guests at the Hotel Cortez, spirits in the Murder House, and other figures who keep performing living routines. Ben fits the silhouette: impossible survival, immediate recruitment into a supernatural household, and a personal history tied to the season’s central number.

The counter-argument is just as strong. Ben still receives phone alerts, eats leftover food, and panics like a living man with trauma. The show has not framed him with the usual ghost visual language. That ambiguity is intentional. It keeps the audience watching his scenes for a tell.

What “Date Night” Could Confirm

Episode 5’s synopsis — a friend of Ben’s girlfriend wanting to reconnect — is the most likely pressure point. If the friend is dead, the conversation becomes a test of Ben’s status. If the friend is alive, Ben’s survival looks more like selection than afterlife. Either outcome will reshape how viewers read every earlier scene on the 13th floor.
