Thirteen people boarded a plane to celebrate the number 13. Only two walked away.
Why the plane-crash mystery still matters for U.S. viewers
American Horror Story Season 13 wastes no time forcing the audience to question what is real. If Ben DeSoto walked away from a mid-air disaster while other passengers did not, the show is either rewriting the rules of survival or signaling that The Apollyon operates outside normal physics. That ambiguity is deliberate. Ryan Murphy’s crossover seasons reward viewers who track small continuity clues — a haircut, a number on a door, a name Constance uses once — because those details later unlock who is alive, who is damned, and who is being used as bait.
For searchers asking “is Ben already dead in AHS 13” or “who survived the plane crash,” the honest answer after the premiere block is: the show has not closed the case. Treat every calm conversation in the lobby as potential afterlife logistics until an episode proves otherwise on screen.

Ben DeSoto sat in seat 13F. Another passenger — one of Kira’s friends — sat in seat 13B. Everyone else in the group died when the plane came apart mid-flight. In American Horror Story Season 13 those two empty seats are not a coincidence. The show wants you to notice them.

What Happened on the Flight in AHS 13 Episode 1?
Kira planned a birthday trip built entirely around the number she considered lucky. Thirteen friends. Friday the 13th. Matching shirts. Ben, who suffers from triskaidekaphobia — a genuine fear of the number 13 — almost stayed behind. He changed his mind at the last minute and took the seat next to the group. The plane hit a storm. The cabin tore open. Bodies were lost to the ocean.
A month later Ben is in New York with no visible injuries. According to The Hollywood Reporter and FilmiFeed, he was found without a scratch. The other survivor from seat 13B is mentioned but not yet shown on screen in the first three episodes. That absence is deliberate.

Why Only the 13 Seats Survived
The pattern is too clean to be coincidence. Ben in 13F. The unnamed friend in 13B. Thirteen members of the birthday party dead. At the same moment the plane went down, Mr. Nas vomited black liquid in the Apollyon penthouse. The timing links the deaths to the entity Ben is now hired to care for.
Constance listens carefully when Ben recounts the seats. She does not treat his survival as random luck. She treats it as selection. “The universe has something wondrous in store for you,” she tells him. In this show, that kind of language is rarely kind.

The Missing Survivor and What Comes Next
The passenger from 13B remains a blank space. Early episode guides list an upcoming chapter whose synopsis mentions a friend of Ben’s girlfriend who wants to reconnect. That description strongly suggests the second survivor is about to re-enter the story. When that happens, the question will be whether both survivors were spared for the same reason or for opposing ones.
Ben has already been delivered to the 13th floor of a building named after the angel of the abyss. If the second survivor is drawn into the same orbit, the plane crash stops looking like a tragedy and starts looking like a recruitment.
