Ryan Murphy gave the clearest hint yet months before American Horror Story Season 13 premiered. The returning stars were not simply gathering for nostalgia. They were uniting against something bigger than anything the franchise had faced before.

“In many seasons, the characters have battled the Antichrist,” Murphy told Vogue. “The only hint I’ll say is, ‘Let’s go above his pay grade for this.’ That’s my clue.”

Michael Langdon, the Antichrist of Apocalypse, is already dead in the main timeline. Whatever is coming in Season 13 sits higher on the hierarchy. After the first three episodes, nearly every visual and narrative clue points in one direction: the frail, horned, black-vomiting man living on the 13th floor of the Apollyon.

What Murphy Actually Said

Murphy has described Season 13 as the Avengers of American Horror Story. Former villains and heroes are fighting side by side because the threat is large enough to force the alliance. He has repeatedly used the phrase “ultimate evil.” When pressed for details, he refused to name it and offered only the pay-grade line.

That single sentence rules out a simple return of Michael Langdon. It also rules out any mid-tier demon or seasonal monster. The language is deliberate. Something sits above the Antichrist in the supernatural chain of command.

Why Mr. Nas Fits the Description

Mr. Nas is introduced as an 87-year-old hospice patient. Constance Langdon treats him with a mixture of care and reverence. She tells Ben that Nas is beloved, that people should “praise his name and what he has done for the world.” She also claims he is the mastermind behind the gathering of the thirteen leading ladies.

Physical details undercut the idea that he is merely an old man. He has claw-like hands. A tail and cloven hooves appear. Horns flash during one of the black-substance episodes. When Ben bathes him, something moves in the water that looks like a baby’s hand. His doctor, played by John Waters, draws thirteen vials of blood every week and keeps live snakes in the same bag.

Most telling is the timing. At the exact moment of the plane crash that kills thirteen people, Nas coughs up black liquid. When Twisty massacres thirteen people at the clown school, Nas vomits the same substance again. The show is linking mass death to his physical state in real time.

The Apollyon Connection

Nas does not live in a random luxury building. He occupies the entire 13th floor of the Apollyon. In the Book of Revelation, Apollyon is the Greek name for the angel of the bottomless pit, the destroyer associated with the Abyss. Episode 3 confirms that the basement of the building contains a portal to Hell. Wilhemina Venable welcomes visitors there.

The vertical design of the location is deliberate. Nas lives at the top. Constance gathers people in the middle. The portal waits below. Everything funnels toward the old man who reacts whenever the number 13 claims new victims.

Satan, Apollyon, or Something Else?

The strongest current theory is that Mr. Nas is Satan himself, or at least an ancient entity operating at that level. The Antichrist was Michael Langdon. Going “above his pay grade” lands squarely on the figure who created or empowered him.

Other possibilities remain open. Some fans point to the biblical Apollyon as a distinct being rather than another name for the Devil. A few have floated the more satirical idea that the ultimate evil could be God, given Murphy’s taste for provocation. Nothing in the first three episodes supports that reading yet.

What the episodes do support is that Nas is not a passive patient. Constance is not simply a caregiver. The Rauhnacht gathering, the thirteen leading ladies, the blood vials, the black substance, and the Hell portal all orbit the same figure.

What the Early Episodes Still Leave Open

The show has not confirmed Nas’s true identity. Paul Anthony Kelly plays the younger version of the character, suggesting flashbacks or a longer history will arrive later. The exact nature of the deal Constance and the others are making remains unclear. Whether the ultimate evil is Nas himself or something he serves is still unanswered.

What is no longer unanswered is the scale. Murphy told the cast they were fighting a force large enough to turn former villains into temporary heroes. After three episodes, that force has a face, a floor, a building named after the destroyer, and a body that reacts every time the number 13 kills.

Frequently Asked Questions

What did Ryan Murphy mean by “above the Antichrist’s pay grade”?

He was explaining that the central threat of Season 13 sits higher in the supernatural hierarchy than Michael Langdon, the Antichrist from Apocalypse. The line is the only direct clue Murphy has given about the identity of the ultimate evil.

Is Mr. Nas the Devil in American Horror Story Season 13?

It is the leading theory after the first three episodes. His physical traits, the timing of the black substance with mass deaths, Constance’s reverence, the Hell portal beneath his building, and Murphy’s pay-grade comment all point in that direction. It has not been confirmed on screen.

What does the name Apollyon mean?

In Revelation 9:11, Apollyon is the Greek name for the angel of the Abyss, often translated as “the destroyer.” The building that houses Mr. Nas carries that name, and its basement contains a portal described as leading to Hell.

Could the ultimate evil be God instead of Satan?

A small number of commentators have suggested the idea because Murphy likes to subvert expectations. Nothing in the premiere episodes supports that reading. Every visual and narrative clue currently points toward a demonic or abyssal figure centered on Mr. Nas.

When will we learn more about the ultimate evil?

Three additional episodes arrive on October 1. The season continues through October 29. Later chapters are expected to clarify Nas’s history and the exact nature of the threat the returning characters have gathered to face.

American Horror Story has spent more than a decade dancing around the edges of true cosmic horror. Season 13 appears ready to stop dancing and name the thing that sits above the Antichrist. Right now, that thing has a name on the door, a floor number, and a body that keeps counting to thirteen.
