In the third episode of American Horror Story Season 13, Constance Langdon looks Elizabeth Short in the eye and makes a promise that sounds almost generous. “Very soon,” she says, “you will be among 13 lucky leading ladies, all as legendary as you are.”
The Black Dahlia has only just arrived at the Apollyon. She still does not fully remember how she got there. Yet Constance is already slotting her into a precise group of thirteen. The number is not casual. Nothing about this season treats the number 13 as decoration.
What follows is the clearest look yet at why Constance is assembling these women, what Rauhnacht has to do with it, and how the “lucky leading ladies” connect to the larger plan unfolding on the 13th floor.
What Constance Actually Tells the Black Dahlia
Elizabeth Short arrives at the Rauhnacht gathering wearing a babydoll mask, escorted by Winter Anderson. When the mask comes off, Constance recognizes her immediately. She does not treat the moment as a surprise. She treats it as the arrival of a missing piece.
Constance reminds Elizabeth of the details of her own death: January 13, 1947. The mutilation. The way her body became a public spectacle. Then she delivers the line about the 13 lucky leading ladies. The wording is careful. These women are not simply guests. They are “legendary.” They are being collected.
Later that same night, Winter, Kai, Tate and Adelaide escort Elizabeth downstairs. The elevator opens onto Club Hell. Wilhemina Venable is waiting. She calls the space a portal to Hell. The episode ends before the ritual fully begins, but the direction of travel is unmistakable. Elizabeth is not attending a party. She is being delivered.
Why Exactly Thirteen
Season 13 has already established a pattern. The plane crash kills in a group that leaves two survivors in seats 13F and 13B. Twisty the Clown murders exactly 13 people at the clown school. Mr. Nas reacts physically every time the count reaches 13. The building itself is named the Apollyon and occupies a floor numbered 13.
Constance’s collection of leading ladies follows the same arithmetic. Thirteen is not a random total. It appears to be a required number for whatever ceremony or transaction is being prepared. Constance speaks of the group as if the roster is nearly complete and Elizabeth is the final or near-final addition.
Rauhnacht itself supplies the timing. The Alpine folk tradition marks the nights when the boundary between the living world and the spirit world thins. Demons move more freely. Constance chooses this window deliberately. The party on the upper floors is only the surface. The real work happens below, in the portal.
Who Else Might Be on the List
The show has not named the other twelve. That absence is intentional. Viewers are left to scan the returning women of American Horror Story and ask which of them could qualify as “legendary” in the same way the Black Dahlia does.
Possible candidates include figures whose deaths or afterlives already carry heavy symbolic weight inside the franchise: certain witches from Coven, victims whose stories became public myth, or women who crossed between the living and the dead in earlier seasons. Constance’s own daughter Adelaide is present at the gathering, but the language Constance uses with Elizabeth suggests the leading ladies are a separate category—women whose fame or notoriety makes them valuable for the ritual.
What matters more than any specific name is the pattern. Constance is not improvising. She is fulfilling a requirement that belongs to Mr. Nas’s larger design. The same man who vomits black liquid when groups of 13 die is also the figure Constance serves with something close to devotion. The leading ladies appear to be another form of currency in that same system.
The Role of Club Hell
Once Elizabeth is taken downstairs, the tone shifts. The upper-floor celebration had the trappings of a dark holiday party—black tree, special ham, carefully managed conversation. Club Hell is stripped of that pretense. Venable does not welcome a guest. She welcomes an arrival at a portal.
Constance’s private instruction to Tate before the group leaves is equally revealing. She tells him to do his part “down there” and promises there will be “a special place for us in the future.” The future she describes is not metaphorical. It is contingent on the success of whatever is about to happen to the 13 leading ladies.
The episode cuts away before the full cost is shown. That choice keeps the exact nature of the ritual off-screen for now. It also leaves the audience with a clear directional statement: the collection of these women is not decorative fan service. It is operational.
What Comes Next
The next episodes air October 1. If the pattern of the first three holds, the identity of additional leading ladies—or the beginning of the ritual itself—will surface soon. Constance has already demonstrated that she can move between the role of charming hostess and cold administrator of Mr. Nas’s needs. The 13 lucky leading ladies sit at the intersection of those two performances.
For now the only confirmed member is Elizabeth Short. The other twelve remain unnamed. The number, the holiday, the portal, and Constance’s careful language all point in the same direction. Thirteen is required. The Black Dahlia is one of them. And whatever is being prepared on the 13th floor of the Apollyon is already in motion.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does Constance mean by “13 lucky leading ladies”?
She tells the Black Dahlia that Elizabeth will soon join a group of 13 legendary women. The context of the Rauhnacht gathering and the immediate trip to Club Hell strongly suggests the group is being assembled for a ritual connected to Mr. Nas and the Hell portal beneath the Apollyon.
Is the Black Dahlia one of the 13?
Yes. Constance explicitly places Elizabeth Short in that category during the Rauhnacht episode.
What is Rauhnacht and why does it matter?
Rauhnacht is an Alpine folk period when the boundary between the living world and the spirit world is believed to thin. Constance chooses this window for the gathering, and the group later moves Elizabeth into the portal known as Club Hell.
Has the show named the other leading ladies?
Not yet. Only Elizabeth Short has been confirmed. The remaining twelve have not been identified on screen.
How does this connect to Mr. Nas?
Constance serves as Mr. Nas’s primary daytime caregiver and speaks of him in reverential terms. The collection of exactly 13 legendary women fits the same numerical pattern that governs the deaths linked to Mr. Nas’s physical reactions. The leading ladies appear to be part of the same larger design.
