Ryan Murphy did not promise another Antichrist. He promised something that sits above that pay grade. After three episodes of American Horror Story Season 13, the question is no longer whether an ultimate evil exists. The question is how many of the returning characters already work for it.
American Horror Story Season 13 ultimate evil theories center on Mr. Nas, the Apollyon portal, and Ryan Murphy’s promise of a threat above the Antichrist. This guide breaks down every major clue after the three-episode premiere.
This picture is not posed. It's really like this to get Mr. Nas ready: 4 hours in the makeup chair, 4 people, 8 hands. Except on full-body bathtub days, then it was 6 people, 12 hands, 8 or 9 hours.

Murphy’s pre-premiere interviews framed the season as a greatest-hits crossover in which heroes and former villains unite against a threat larger than Michael Langdon. The early episodes have given that threat a face, a building, and a body count. Mr. Nas vomits black sludge when thirteen people die. Constance gathers legendary dead women on Rauhnacht. A portal labeled Club Hell opens under the Apollyon. Cordelia feels the same force from New Orleans and calls it a harbinger of doom.
Taken together, the pieces point to an entity that uses the number 13 as both symbol and mechanism. Whether that entity is the Devil, the biblical Apollyon, or something the franchise has not yet named, the first three episodes treat it as the organizing intelligence behind every major event.

Before the premiere Murphy told interviewers the season would bring characters together against an “ultimate evil.” When asked how that evil related to the Antichrist already featured in Apocalypse, he indicated the new threat sat higher in the hierarchy. That distinction matters. Michael Langdon was a product of the Murder House bloodline and a specific apocalyptic timeline. Whatever is operating through Nas and the Apollyon appears older, less personal, and more structural.
The building’s name is the first clue. Apollyon is the Greek term used in Revelation for the angel of the abyss, the Destroyer. Placing the central mystery on the thirteenth floor of a building with that name is not subtle. It is a declaration that the season’s villain is not another charismatic Antichrist but a force associated with the pit itself.
How the First Three Episodes Build the Case
Episode 1 ties Nas’s physical crisis to the plane crash that kills thirteen people. Episode 2 ties another crisis to Twisty’s clown-school massacre of thirteen. Episode 3 uses Rauhnacht—the traditional night when the veil is thinnest—to move the first of the “leading ladies” into the portal. The pattern is consistent: the number appears, bodies fall, Nas reacts, and the machinery under the building advances.
Constance’s language around Nas—“father to us all,” “praise his name”—sounds like worship. Venable’s calm identification of the basement as a portal to Hell removes any remaining ambiguity about the destination. The only open question is whether Nas is the ultimate evil, its current vessel, or its most visible servant.
Why “Above the Antichrist” Changes the Stakes
Previous crossover seasons treated Michael Langdon as the end of the line. Apocalypse was about stopping him. Season 13 begins from the premise that stopping the Antichrist was not enough. Something larger was always waiting. That reframing lets the show reuse every major character without simply repeating the same war. The witches, the Murder House ghosts, the Hotel survivors, and the Cult figures are no longer fighting a single prophesied boy. They are fighting the system that produces such boys.
Whether that system is Satan, the abyss, or a franchise-original entity still wearing the shape of an old man in a bed, the early evidence treats it as the reason the number 13 keeps killing people and the reason so many of the dead have been invited back to the table.

Frequently Asked Questions
What did Ryan Murphy say about the ultimate evil?
He described a threat that sits above the Antichrist’s level and said characters from across the franchise would unite against it.
Is Mr. Nas the ultimate evil?
It is the leading theory after three episodes. His physical reactions track mass deaths, Constance speaks of him with reverence, and he lives above a portal to Hell. Confirmation has not yet arrived on screen.
How does the number 13 connect to the ultimate evil?
Every major death cluster and ritual in the first three episodes is built around thirteen. The number appears to function as both the evil’s signature and its fuel.
