After three episodes of American Horror Story Season 13, the returning witches, serial killers, and ghosts are no longer the central mystery. That title belongs to the frail old man living on the thirteenth floor of a building called the Apollyon.
Who is Mr. Nas in American Horror Story Season 13? After three episodes the hospice patient on the thirteenth floor of the Apollyon is the strongest candidate for Ryan Murphy’s ultimate evil. Theories, dual casting, and every major clue.
His name is Mr. Nas. Constance Langdon treats him with reverence. Ben DeSoto is hired to keep him alive through the night. And almost every violent event in the early episodes appears timed to the moments when Nas’s body begins to fail.
Ryan Murphy promised an “ultimate evil” that sits above the Antichrist. After the premiere weekend, most of the evidence points at the man in the bed.
This picture is not posed. It's really like this to get Mr. Nas ready: 4 hours in the makeup chair, 4 people, 8 hands. Except on full-body bathtub days, then it was 6 people, 12 hands, 8 or 9 hours.

Constance introduces him as 87 years old. She calls him a philanthropist, poet, prophet, and “father to us all.” She insists he is deeply loved and has not been abandoned. Dr. Phibes, played by John Waters, draws thirteen vials of blood from him every week and keeps live snakes in the same medical bag.
Nas occupies the entire thirteenth floor. His body shows non-human details—claw-like hands, a tail, cloven hooves. During sponge baths something moves in the milky water; at one point it resembles a baby’s hand. When mass deaths occur elsewhere, Nas contorts, develops what look like horns, and vomits a thick black substance. The plane crash that kills Kira and her friends happens while Nas is in the middle of one of these episodes. Twisty’s clown-school massacre of thirteen people coincides with another.
Constance credits him as the mastermind behind the plan to gather thirteen “leading ladies” on Rauhnacht. The building beneath them contains a portal that Wilhemina Venable openly calls the way to Hell.
Two actors play the role. Fedor Steer appears as the elderly Nas. Paul Anthony Kelly is listed as Young Nas, confirming the season will move backward in time.
Paul Anthony Kelly really went from playing JFK Jr. in Love Story to entering the American Horror Story universe as Young Nas. Quite the career pivot. Now that Season 13 is finally here, I’m curious to see what Murphy has planned for him..

Theory 1: Mr. Nas Is the Devil (or Something Higher Than the Antichrist)
This remains the strongest single theory. Murphy has said the season’s threat sits “above” the Antichrist’s pay grade. Michael Langdon already filled that role in Apocalypse. Whatever sits above him is either Satan or an equivalent figure.
The physical evidence fits. Hooves, tail, horns, black vomit, and a building named Apollyon (the Greek term for the Destroyer and the angel of the abyss in Revelation) all point in the same direction. Constance’s language—“praise his name,” “father to us all”—sounds like worship. The collection of thirteen dead women on a night when the veil is thin looks like a ritual offering or a recruitment drive for Hell.
If the theory is correct, the hospice arrangement is not care. It is containment, or a form of feeding, or both.
Theory 2: Nas Is Apollyon Himself
Apollyon is not only the name of the building. In biblical tradition it is the name of the angel who rules the bottomless pit. Some viewers argue the building is simply the visible tip of the entity that lives on its thirteenth floor. In this reading Nas does not live in the Apollyon. He is the Apollyon, currently wearing the shape of a dying old man.
The dual casting supports the idea. A younger version implies a long existence that has only recently taken on this particular mortal form. The rapid aging Constance and Phibes discuss—from 87 to 90 in a matter of days—suggests the body is a temporary vessel rather than a permanent identity.
Theory 3: Nas Is Feeding on the Number 13
Every major death cluster so far is linked to the number and timed to Nas’s physical crises. The plane carries thirteen women celebrating the thirteenth. Twisty kills thirteen people. Thirteen vials of blood leave Nas’s body each week. The Last Supper painting in the penthouse has been altered to show thirteen figures.
One coherent theory is that Nas does not merely cause these events. He requires them. The black substance he expels could be the residual of whatever energy the deaths supply. Ben’s survival in seat 13F would then be less a miracle and more a deliberate selection—an observer or a future participant who has already been marked.
Theory 4: Constance Is Not Serving Him Freely
Constance’s devotion is intense, but the history of the character suggests she rarely serves without calculating an advantage. Some viewers believe she is bound to Nas by a bargain that restored her children to “this mortal coil.” Others think she is positioning herself as high priestess of whatever new order the ultimate evil is building. Either way, her caretaking is not simple hospice work. It is the visible half of a relationship whose terms have not yet been stated.
What the Dual Casting Suggests
Paul Anthony Kelly’s presence as Young Nas is the clearest signal that the season will not keep the character confined to a bed. Flashbacks or parallel timelines are coming. Those sequences will almost certainly answer how long Nas has been operating, whether he has appeared in earlier seasons under different names, and what relationship he had with the original Murder House, the Coven, or the Hotel Cortez before Constance ever met him.
Until those scenes arrive, every theory remains provisional. The first three episodes have done their job: they have made the most ordinary-looking character in the season the one viewers cannot stop watching.
The Bottom Line After Three Episodes
Mr. Nas is the organizing principle of the premiere. The number 13, the Apollyon, the returning dead, the portal, and Ben’s survival all orbit him. Whether he is the Devil, the Destroyer, a parasite that feeds on the unlucky number, or something the show has not yet named, the early evidence treats him as the source rather than a symptom.
The next episodes will either confirm the hierarchy or introduce a larger force still waiting above him. For now, the man on the thirteenth floor remains the clearest answer to Murphy’s promise of an evil that outranks the Antichrist.
