Washington, September 19, 2026 — The U.S. Postal Service has halted work on a system tied to President Trump’s effort to restrict mail voting after the Supreme Court blocked the related executive order for this year’s midterms.

Postmaster General David Steiner confirmed the stoppage. The decision comes as early voting is already underway in several states and control of Congress hangs in the balance.
Supporters of the original order argued it would strengthen election security. Critics said it would suppress legitimate votes. The Supreme Court’s intervention effectively paused the plan for the 2026 midterms.
