Mahershala Ali’s next movie arrives at a striking moment in his career. Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, written and directed by Bassam Tariq, reunites the actor with the filmmaker after their planned Marvel Blade collaboration fell apart. The film premiered at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival and is scheduled for a U.S. theatrical release on September 25, 2026.
What is Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother about?
Ali plays Latif, a devout Muslim father and contract killer whose wife has died. He tries to leave his violent work behind while protecting his children, but pressure from his former criminal world pulls him back in. Reuters describes the film as an action thriller built around faith, family and fatherhood.
The Blade connection is impossible to miss
Tariq was once attached to direct Marvel’s Blade reboot with Ali. That project never reached production, and the two eventually turned their collaboration into an original film. Ali has also said that the physical skills he developed during more than a year of Blade preparation became useful on the new movie.
Why the new movie matters to Ali
Rather than being another franchise role, the film gives Ali an original character with a different emotional center. The story combines action with questions about grief, faith and fatherhood, while Tariq brings the personal perspective that shaped his earlier work.
