While Constance Langdon gathers the dead on the thirteenth floor of the Apollyon and Mr. Nas vomits black sludge in time with mass killings, the witches of Miss Robichaux’s Academy have barely moved. Cordelia Goode has felt the threat. She has named it. She has not yet answered it.

Cordelia harbinger of doom American Horror Story Season 13 opens the season: the Supreme senses vengeful death while the Apollyon story advances in New York. Why the witches have not acted yet—and when they might.

That delay is one of the most deliberate choices in the first three episodes of American Horror Story Season 13. The season opens with the Supreme sensing “so much vengeful death” and declaring that something wicked is coming. Madison Montgomery dismisses the warning. Three episodes later the portal under the Apollyon is already open and the first of the thirteen leading ladies has been delivered to it. The coven is still in New Orleans.

What Cordelia Actually Said

In the opening minutes of Episode 1, Cordelia is at the academy with Madison and a new student, Ophelia. A storm is rising—the same storm that will tear apart Ben’s plane. Cordelia stops. She feels it before anyone else does.

“So much vengeful death,” she says. “Something wicked this way comes.”

The line is not casual. Cordelia has spent entire seasons learning to trust her second sight. In Coven she lost her eyes and gained clearer vision. In Apocalypse she saw the end of the world and still chose to fight. When she speaks of a harbinger now, the audience is meant to treat the warning as reliable.

Madison’s response is pure Madison: she tells Cordelia it is all in her head. The exchange establishes the two poles of the coven’s early reaction—one character who feels the scale of the threat, another who refuses to take it seriously until the evidence becomes undeniable.

Why the Witches Are Still on the Sidelines

Three practical reasons explain the delay.

First, the threat is concentrated in New York. The Apollyon, Mr. Nas, Club Hell, and the gathering of the leading ladies are all happening inside one building. The witches’ power base remains Miss Robichaux’s. Until the danger reaches Louisiana or until Cordelia decides the distance no longer matters, the coven has no immediate battlefield.

Second, the season is structured as a crossover, not a pure Coven sequel. Ryan Murphy has described it as an Avengers-style assembly. The early episodes are busy reintroducing Constance, Tate, Adelaide, Kai, Winter, Venable, Twisty, and the Black Dahlia. The witches are being held in reserve so their entrance can carry weight when it finally arrives.

Third, Cordelia has learned caution. The last time the coven faced an existential threat—Michael Langdon and the Antichrist—the cost was enormous. Mallory had to rewrite time itself. Cordelia is not likely to empty the academy and fly north on the strength of a single vision. She will want confirmation, allies, and a plan.

What the Harbinger Actually Points To

Everything shown in the first three episodes supports Cordelia’s reading. The plane crash, the clown-school massacre, the black substance Nas expels, the Rauhnacht ritual, and the open portal under the Apollyon are all expressions of the same force. Murphy has said the season’s villain sits above the Antichrist. Cordelia’s language—“vengeful death,” “something wicked”—fits an entity that is older, larger, and already partially active.

The fact that she feels it from hundreds of miles away also matters. The threat is not local. It is radiating. When the witches do move, they will not be walking into a contained haunted house. They will be walking into a process that has already begun collecting souls and opening doors.

Madison’s Role in the Coming Conflict

Madison’s skepticism is not just comic relief. She has died, gone to her personal hell, been pulled back, and returned to the same retail nightmare after the timeline reset in Apocalypse. Her default position is that grand prophecies usually end with someone else paying the price. That attitude will either make her the last witch to commit or the most ruthless once she finally does.

Her presence also guarantees that the coven’s response will not be unified. Cordelia leads by consensus and moral clarity. Madison leads by self-interest and sharp edges. The tension between them is one of the few dynamics the season can still use without repeating Apocalypse beat for beat.

When the Witches Are Likely to Arrive

The release schedule places the next block of episodes on October 1. The titles already announced—“Is That All There Is?,” “Date Night,” and “The Return of Devil’s Night”—suggest the Constance/Nas story will continue to expand before the full coven intervenes. A mid-season arrival would give the New York plot time to establish the rules of the portal and the leading-ladies ritual, then force the witches to react to a situation that is already halfway complete.

That timing also protects the emotional payoff. If Cordelia walks into Club Hell after Elizabeth Short and several other legendary women have already been processed, the stakes will be higher than if she arrived in time to prevent the first crossing.

The Larger Pattern

Season 13 is running two parallel clocks. One belongs to Constance and Mr. Nas: collect the thirteen, keep the portal open, feed whatever sits above the Antichrist. The other belongs to Cordelia: feel the threat, gather proof, decide when the cost of waiting exceeds the cost of acting.

So far the first clock is winning. The second has only started ticking. When the two finally meet, the season will stop being a reunion and start being a war.

Frequently Asked Questions

What did Cordelia sense in the first episode?

She felt “so much vengeful death” and said “something wicked this way comes,” linking the sensation to the same storm that destroys Ben’s plane.

Why haven’t the witches intervened yet?

The threat is centered in New York, the season is still assembling its crossover cast, and Cordelia appears to be waiting for clearer confirmation before committing the coven.

Is this a full Coven sequel?

No. Ryan Murphy has described Season 13 as an Avengers-style crossover using characters from multiple seasons, with the number 13 as the central motif rather than a pure continuation of the witches’ story.

Will Madison take the threat seriously?

Not yet. In the opening she dismisses Cordelia’s warning. Her history suggests she will commit only when the danger becomes personal or impossible to ignore.

When are the witches likely to appear in force?

The early episodes keep them in New Orleans. A mid-season arrival after the New York plot is further advanced is the most likely structure.
