Sarah Paulson has played monsters, addicts, tyrants, and conjoined twins across more than a decade of American Horror Story. In Season 13 she is doing several of those roles again. Yet the character she keeps calling the hardest is the one who tries to do the right thing.

Sarah Paulson Cordelia Goode is the hardest role in American Horror Story Season 13, the actress says, because fundamental goodness is tougher to play than Venable or Sally. Full quote breakdown and what it means for the coven storyline.

In a recent interview with TheWrap, Paulson singled out Cordelia Goode as the most challenging part of the new season. Not because of the magic or the stakes, but because of the emotional baseline the character requires.

Paulson’s Own Words

“I love being Cordelia,” she said. “I feel like, of all the stuff I’ve gotten to do on the show, it is oddly the hardest because she really just moves from a place of fundamental goodness and wanting to be a support system to the young women in her life. It’s always a little wilder to play the crazier characters, so it’s kind of harder to play someone who’s arguably somewhat more normal.”

That statement cuts against the usual hierarchy of difficulty in horror performance. Most actors find the unhinged roles more demanding. Paulson argues the opposite. The restrained, decent character leaves fewer places to hide.

Why Cordelia Demands More Than Venable or Sally

Wilhemina Venable, the authoritarian leader of Outpost 3, operates from fear, control, and cruelty. Sally McKenna, the junkie ghost of the Hotel Cortez, is pure appetite and chaos. Both characters give an actor clear, high-contrast choices. Their emotions are loud. Their motivations are extreme.

Cordelia does not work that way. She is the Supreme who still tries to mother the coven. She carries the weight of every previous loss and still chooses protection over power for its own sake. Playing that kind of steady moral center, especially while the world around her is collapsing into portals and resurrected dead, requires constant calibration. One false note of sentimentality or one slip into melodrama and the character stops feeling real.

Paulson has now lived with Cordelia across more than a decade of her own life. She first played the role when she was not yet 40. She is 51 now and still putting on the same wig. That continuity creates its own pressure. The performance has to feel continuous with the woman who survived Apocalypse, not like a nostalgia costume.

The Logistics of Playing Several People at Once

Season 13 asks Paulson to do more than refine one difficult character. Ryan Murphy has said she is playing six or seven roles. Confirmed returns include Cordelia, Sally, Venable, and at least two faces from Double Feature. On some shooting days she moved between four distinct people—four wigs, four costumes, four personalities—in a single shift.

She described one such day to Collider: “I went back and forth to the trailer to change into four different people, four different wigs, four different costumes, four different personalities, four different people. And that was a day where I was like, ‘Wow, look at me. I’m pretty cool.’”

At the same time she was filming Murphy’s legal drama All’s Fair in Los Angeles. One week involved shooting Horror Story in New York on Monday and Tuesday, flying home Wednesday, shooting All’s Fair Thursday and Friday, returning to New York for a Sunday scene with Jessica Lange, then flying back to Los Angeles on Monday. The physical and mental load is part of the story of this season even if it never appears on screen.

What This Means for the Season

The early episodes have already shown Cordelia sensing a harbinger of doom while the Apollyon storyline gathers the dead. If Paulson is correct that Cordelia is the hardest role, then the emotional core of the witches’ response to the ultimate evil will rest on a performance that has to stay grounded while everything around it escalates into spectacle.

That is a deliberate choice. Murphy could have given Paulson only the wilder characters. Instead he asked her to carry the moral center of the coven while also slipping into the more chaotic roles that made her famous. The result is an actor working at two different registers in the same season—sometimes in the same week.

The Quiet Difficulty of Being Good

Horror audiences are trained to watch the monsters. Paulson’s point is that the person who refuses to become one can be the more demanding performance. Cordelia has power. She has history. She has every reason to harden. Choosing not to is the work.

In a season built as a greatest-hits reunion, that choice may be the one element that still feels new.
