Pennsylvania’s measles outbreak has climbed close to 700 confirmed cases, according to state health officials, making it one of the largest recent outbreaks in the United States.
Current Numbers
As of Monday the state counted 693 cases across 38 counties. Two deaths have been confirmed, and a third death is under review. Most cases involve people who were unvaccinated or whose vaccination status could not be verified.
Public Health Response
Officials are urging residents to ensure MMR vaccination is up to date, especially before school, travel, or large gatherings. Clinics and local health departments have expanded walk-in vaccination hours in affected counties.
Why Measles Spreads Quickly
Measles is highly contagious. It can linger in the air for hours and infect people who are not immune. Outbreaks tend to grow fastest in communities with lower vaccination coverage.
Health authorities say the outbreak is still active and that additional cases are likely in the coming weeks if transmission continues.
