Three episodes into American Horror Story Season 13 and one question is already dominating every fan conversation: Who the hell is Mr. Nas?
He barely speaks. He lives on the entire 13th floor of a building called the Apollyon in New York City. He has a personal doctor who draws exactly 13 vials of blood every week and keeps live snakes in the same bag. And every time something catastrophic happens — a plane crash that kills 13 people, a clown school massacre that claims another 13 lives — Mr. Nas is somewhere in that penthouse vomiting black sludge.

If Ryan Murphy’s long-promised “ultimate evil” that sits above the Antichrist has a face this season, it looks a lot like the frail, horned figure in that bed.
The Man on the 13th Floor
Ben DeSoto (Joey Pollari) meets Mr. Nas the same night he starts his new hospice job. Constance Langdon (Jessica Lange), who has somehow moved from the Murder House into this Manhattan building, introduces the patient with the kind of reverence usually reserved for saints or kings.
She calls him 87 years old. She calls him a philanthropist, a husband, a poet, a prophet, and “father to us all.” She insists he was never abandoned by his family. The previous night-shift caregiver, she casually mentions, died by suicide.
Ben’s first sponge bath reveals the truth under the blankets: claw-like hands, a tail, cloven hooves. Later that night, Nas leaves his bed, contorts, grows horns, and throws up the same black substance that appeared during the plane crash Ben barely survived.
This is not a dying old man. This is something else entirely.
This picture is not posed. It's really like this to get Mr. Nas ready: 4 hours in the makeup chair, 4 people, 8 hands. Except on full-body bathtub days, then it was 6 people, 12 hands, 8 or 9 hours.

Two Actors, One Nightmare
Ryan Murphy cast two performers to play Nas across different points in time.
Fedor Steer plays the present-day elderly version. The Dutch-Canadian character actor is no stranger to horror — he appeared in The Haunting of Hill House, Evil, and even the latest Scary Movie. At 6-foot-5 with a lean, angular face, Steer makes the bedridden Nas feel both pathetic and terrifying at the same time.
Paul Anthony Kelly plays Young Nas. Fresh off his breakout as JFK Jr. in Murphy’s Love Story, Kelly dyed his hair platinum blonde for the role and has already been spotted in snakeskin-embossed leather. The existence of a younger version strongly suggests flashbacks or parallel timelines that will explain how this creature has been operating for decades — maybe centuries.
The Doctor With the Snakes
John Waters, the legendary filmmaker making his AHS debut, plays Mr. Phibes, Nas’s personal physician. Once a week Phibes draws exactly 13 vials of blood “to check biomarkers for age and disease.” He stores those vials in a medical bag that also contains living snakes. Constance treats the ritual like it’s the most normal thing in the world.
Waters’ presence is pure Murphy: camp, grotesque, and impossible to look away from. The snakes alone have already become a meme among early viewers.
Is Mr. Nas the Devil?
Murphy told reporters before the premiere that the season’s big threat sits “above the Antichrist.” After three episodes, almost every major theory points at Nas.
- He owns the entire 13th floor of a building named Apollyon — the Hebrew and Greek name for the angel of the bottomless pit in the Book of Revelation.
- His body reacts in real time to mass deaths happening hundreds of miles away.
- Constance is collecting 13 legendary dead women (including the Black Dahlia) for a Rauhnacht ritual that Nas appears to be masterminding.
- The building itself contains a portal to Hell, revealed in episode 3.
Whether Nas is Satan, a higher entity, or something the show has never named before remains the biggest open question of the season. What is clear is that every returning character — the witches of Miss Robichaux’s, the Langdon family, Twisty the Clown, Winter Anderson — is being pulled into his orbit.
Why This Character Matters Right Now
American Horror Story has always loved its monsters, but it has rarely introduced one this quietly or this effectively. Nas does not give monologues. He does not chase people down hallways. He simply exists in that penthouse, and the world around him starts breaking in patterns of 13.
For a season built as an Avengers-style reunion of every major AHS icon, Mr. Nas is the reason they all had to come back. He is the threat that required Constance, Cordelia, Tate, Kai, Marie Laveau, and the rest to share the same story for the first time.
Ten episodes remain. The next batch drops October 1. By then we may finally learn what Nas really is — and why Constance has spent years bathing a demon and calling him father.

Constance & Phibes are excited that Mr. Nas went from 87 - 89 which happened AFTER the 13 deaths on the plane crash. Constance even happily mentions "13 more years til he'''s a 100". When Mr. Nas reaches 100, that'''s his final form.

What Fans Are Saying About Mr. Nas
Online discussion after the three-episode premiere has been almost entirely focused on Mr. Nas. Viewers are pausing on the sponge-bath scenes, the horns, the black sludge, and Constance’s strange devotion. Some call him a new version of the Antichrist. Others argue he is older and more powerful than Michael Langdon ever was. A smaller group thinks Nas is a collective force — something that feeds on patterned death rather than a single devil with a name.
What unites almost every theory is the number 13. The plane crash kills 13. The clown school kills 13. The blood draws come in 13s. Constance is gathering 13 legendary women. Nas lives on the 13th floor of a building named after the angel of the abyss. The show is not being subtle, and fans are treating every 13 as a clue.
How Mr. Nas Connects to Past Seasons
American Horror Story has always recycled its mythology. Season 13 is the first time the franchise has openly framed a crossover as a response to one central threat. If Nas is that threat, then the return of Constance, Tate, Kai, Winter, the Black Dahlia, Twisty, and the Coven witches is not nostalgia for its own sake. It is recruitment.
The presence of both an elderly Nas (Fedor Steer) and a younger Nas (Paul Anthony Kelly) also suggests the character has been active across decades. That opens the door to flashbacks that could touch Asylum, Hotel, or even earlier American history. The next episode batches will likely decide whether Nas stays a mysterious silhouette or becomes the most defined villain the show has introduced in years.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who plays Mr. Nas in American Horror Story Season 13?
Fedor Steer plays the elderly present-day Nas. Paul Anthony Kelly plays the younger version of the same character.
Is Mr. Nas the ultimate evil Ryan Murphy talked about?
All early evidence points in that direction. Murphy described a threat “above the Antichrist,” and Nas is the only new character connected to the mass deaths, the hell portal, and the gathering of 13 legendary women.
What is the Apollyon building?
A residential building in New York City where Nas owns the entire 13th floor. Episode 3 reveals it contains a portal connected to Hell. The name Apollyon is another name for the angel of the abyss in the Book of Revelation.
Why does John Waters draw 13 vials of blood?
Officially, to monitor biomarkers for age and disease. In reality, the number 13 is the season’s central motif, and the snakes in the bag make the ritual feel more occult than medical.
Will we see more of Young Nas?
Almost certainly. Casting Paul Anthony Kelly for a younger version signals that the show plans to explore Nas’s history in upcoming episodes.
American Horror Story Season 13 continues Thursdays on FX and streams next day on Hulu. New episodes drop October 1.
