NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. — The United States has deployed weapons in Earth’s orbit, Air Force Secretary Troy Meink said Monday, offering the clearest public confirmation to date that American forces maintain on-orbit space-control capabilities.
Speaking at the Air, Space and Cyber Conference, Meink said the United States has “on-orbit space control weapons capable of defending the joint force against hostile adversary action.” He did not describe the systems, their number, or when they were placed in orbit.
Why the Statement Matters
For years, U.S. officials have warned that Russia and China are developing tools that could jam, dazzle, or damage satellites. Meink’s remarks mark a shift from general warnings to an explicit claim that U.S. systems are already fielded in space for defensive space control.
Analysts note that “space control” can cover a range of effects, from electronic interference to more destructive options. Officials declined to say whether the weapons are kinetic or non-kinetic.
Broader Space Buildup
Meink also pointed to rapid progress on space-based interceptor work, saying a program moved from initial contract to flight-ready hardware in less than a year. Separate tracking and missile-defense related constellations remain part of a wider push to protect U.S. forces and commercial space infrastructure.
The Pentagon has argued that modern military operations depend on satellites for navigation, communications, and missile warning, making orbit a contested domain rather than a sanctuary.
International Reaction
Competitors have long accused Washington of militarizing space while advancing their own counter-space programs. U.S. officials frame the deployment as deterrence and defense of the joint force if conflict extends beyond Earth’s surface.
